EPS campus police probe into Longfellow fight ends

Aug 17, 2023

An investigation into a fight between two Longfellow Middle School students Tuesday has concluded.

Enid Public Schools Director of School and Community relations Amber Graham Fitzgerald said campus police spoke this morning with the teen who was hospitalized following the fight.

The injured teen was released Thursday from Integris Bass Baptist Hospital, where he was taken following Tuesday's incident.

The "narrative supplement" to the report released Tuesday states the injured teen doesn't recall what happened.

The student told campus police "he was in the auditorium watching a movie and the next thing he can recall is around midnight and being in the hospital," according to the report supplement.

The supplement also states the campus police officer took another report on a different student at Longfellow after the movie was over at 11:35 a.m. The time of the assault was about 12:30 p.m., according to emergency response reports.

An Enid Public Schools campus police report lists the boy suffered apparent broken bones, possible internal injuries, severe lacerations, unconsciousness and apparent minor injury.

The report also lists the offense as "aggravated battery" and indicates it was a hate/bias incident. Fitzgerald said the hate/bias box" is checked anytime it may play a role in the situation, based on information gathered during the investigation."

According to a report filed by campus police, officers responded to Longfellow, 900 E. Broadway, in reference to a fight. The school serves grades 6-8.

When officers arrived, Life and Enid Fire Department already were on scene and leaving with one teen in the ambulance, which had lights and sirens activated. A secretary told officers that student's name, which has been redacted throughout the report, and that he had suffered several injuries.

Officers spoke to Assistant Principal Jennifer Cruz. She said the teen in the ambulance had some head injuries and also was knocked unconscious for about a minute, according to the report.

The other male student involved in the fight was called into the office. He said he was playing dodgeball on the blacktop when he accidentally bumped into the teen and said, "My bad," according to the report. He said the other teen reportedly told him he needed to "go back to the islands," meaning the Marshall Islands, according to the report. The other student said they began to push each other, and then he punched the teen in the face. He said after the teen fell to the asphalt, he kept hitting him until someone screamed, and he stopped, according to the report.

District Attorney Mike Fields said he is limited on commenting about the case because state statutes require some juvenile proceedings to remain confidential.

The incident has garnered attention in both national and international publications and media.
